J. Sumner Bell III, MD, FACP, AGAF
Dr. Bell is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia and a graduate of Davidson College and the Medical College of Virginia. After completing an Internal Medicine Residency at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital of Philadelphia, he trained for three years in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Bell has practiced gastroenterology for more than twenty years in Southeastern Virginia. Active for many years in community and national medical organizations, from 2000 to 2005 Dr. Bell was President of the Eastern Virginia Medical School and has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the American Gastroenterological Association. A strong advocate for patient empowerment and patient education, he is the Advisor for Patient Education Activities for the American Gastroenterological Association.
He is Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at EVMS and has received many awards, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Portsmouth Schools Foundation. In 2011 Becker’s ASC Review named Dr. Bell one of the top 75 gastroenterologists in America.
He is married to Susan and has two children, both of whom are pursuing healthcare careers. Dr. Bell enjoys the practice of medicine, beach walks with his dog Roxy, music, reading, travel, and golf.
